John D. Dumbaugh was a partner with Syprett Meshad beginning in1984, after joining the firm in 1974. He was a board-certified attorney, recognized as an expert in the field of real estate by The Florida Bar for 35 years of continuous certification. His practice areas were focused on real estate development, international real estate investment, title insurance, lending practice, and estate planning and estate administration.
Attorney Dumbaugh was admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida, and Florida State Courts, and was an Approved Closing Agent for all area institutional lenders, Old Republic National Title Insurance Company, Chicago Title Insurance Company, and Attorneys’ Title Fund Services. As well, he served on the circuit advisory team of Attorneys’ Title Fund Services for the 12th Judicial Circuit.
Fluent in German, Attorney Dumbaugh served as a referral attorney to the German Consulates in Miami, Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia. He was certified as fluent in the German language through the “German for Law Professionals” program at the Goethe Institute, Bonn, Germany in 2000.
In 2024, Attorney Dumbaugh was recognized by The Florida Bar for 50 years of membership. In 2000, he received the The Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award in recognition of his pro bono service to the community. He was also honored with the 2013 Legacy Award by Habitat for Humanity Sarasota, in recognition of his 20-plus years of service to the organization.
Attorney Dumbaugh first became a Board Certified Specialist (B.C.S.) in 1990. Board certified lawyers must meet The Florida Bar’s highest standards for special knowledge, skills and proficiency in various areas of law and professionalism and ethics in the practice of law. Board certified lawyers’ experience and competency have been rigorously evaluated, and they are the only Florida lawyers allowed use the letters B.C.S. to indicate Board Certified Specialist when referring to their legal credentials. Only seven percent of eligible Florida Bar members have earned board certification. Lawyers seeking certification must be members in good standing of The Florida Bar and must meet the standards prescribed by the state’s Supreme Court.
Attorney Dumbaugh earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Florida in 1974. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree, with honors, in Political Science and Economics, with a minor degree in German, from the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. A portion of his undergraduate study was at the Universität Basel, Switzerland. He is a member of the legal honorary fraternity, Phi Alpha Delta.
Attorney Dumbaugh was a member of the Board of Directors for the Choral Artists of Sarasota, the region’s premier professional vocal ensemble. He served on the boards of the Sarasota Mental Health Association, Sarasota United Cerebral Palsy, Siesta Key Actor’s Theatre, Habitat for Humanity Sarasota, Key Chorale, and Sarasota Power & Sail Squadron.
Born in Butler, Pennsylvania, Mr. Dumbaugh was a Sarasota resident since 1965 and was a graduate of Riverview High School, which honored him with the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Class of 1967 award in 2017.
